Sony Ponies Up For Spider-Man 4

In Marvel’s August 5th conference call about their second quarter earnings they mentioned that Sony have already paid them an advance of $5 million on Spider-Man 4. So I think that ends whatever speculation might have been left about whether there would be another Spider-Man movie. That May 2011 date is looking more and more likely.

Spider-Man 3 wasn’t terribly well received by fans and scored mediocre reviews with the critics. Mind you that didn’t stop it raking in over $330 million domestically and another $550 million in the rest of the world. So a sequel was always likely.

The bigger question I guess is who will be attached to it and who might be the villain. I’ve always had a soft spot for Electro myself, but Kraven the Hunter could also work well as would Vulture and Black Cat is a possibility. Mysterio might be tougher one to pull off. Venom is probably out of the picture since it looks like they’re lining up a spin-off movie to tackle that story.

The fanboy in me kind of wants to see the Sinister Six go toe to toe with Spider-Man on the big screen, but I’m very wary about cramming that many villains into one movie. Better to have only one I think.

But will Sam Raimi be back as director and will Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst return to their roles? It might be time for a new director to find a fresh angle on the franchise after all.

  1. Although it wasn’t as good as the first two, I thought SM3 was still a decent flick. I thought they would have done better to introduce Venom only at the very end, telling everyone that he will be the heavy in number four.

I’d like to see the Reptile myself. Peter will try to save him, as Curt Connors is one of his teachers. Kraven could enter the story by announcing his intention to kill the Reptile before Spider-Man finds him.

Whoever the next villain is, they need to be careful of not sinking the story with too many characters. This was one of the big, big problems that killed “Batman & Robin” - too many costumed idiots running around without a clue what they’re doing there.

That being said, they could do the Sinister Six as “Spider-Man 6,” brining back villains who have already been introduced like Sandman and Doctor Octopus.

  2. What the heak do you mean? Spiderman 3 was awesome! And those first two movies were terrible! Just terrible! I mean there wasn`t much action and there were only one villain in each of them. Spiderman 3 was very action-packed and it had awesome villains. I thought sandman was the best villain because he is like invincible and at the end he was a big giant. And the fighting between harry and peter/spiderman was much better than the fighting between the Norman osborn in the first one because it was more intense and in the first one The first green goblin/Norman osborn didn`t fly around on his glider so much. And venom, well he only got like twenty minutes of the movie but still he was just awesome and he looks really scary but cool.

Spiderman 3 had lots of action and it had three villains and spiderman 4 comes after spiderman 3 so it should have lots of action too and it should probably have four villains like Carnage, lizard, electro and mysterio. And it the last battle sandman should team up with spiderman because he told him the whole story at the end and he still hasn`t passed. It wouldn`t make sense if they only put carnage and lizard because there were three villains in this latest one so there shouldn`t be only two villains in an after movie. And it`s supposed to get better every movie.
