Spoiler Policies
Over at Big Dumb Object, James has been thinking about spoilers and how to handle them. Specifically he’s got a certain Star Wars film on his mind. Unfortunately the last two Star Wars films have dropped my rabid enthusiasm down to more of a “cross fingers and hope for the best” wishfullness on Star Wars.
However I do have strong feelings on the subject of spoilers. I think they spoil things. Back when Buffy The Vampire Slayer was still on I was a real spoiler junkie for a couple of seasons and noticed that the more I knew about an episode the less I enjoyed it. So for the final season I cut myself off from spoilers completely. Low and behold I enjoyed the season far more than most people apparently did.
So generally speaking I don’t want to be spoiled. I want the tv show or film to be fresh and at least semi-surprising to me. But I hate it when people take this to extremes. I know some people insist that the trailers for next week’s episode are spoilers. Some people demand that they shouldn’t be informed what actors are in an episode or what the TV Guide description is because they are spoilers. And then there are the people who think that spoilers should be kept in place for 6 months because thats when they will watch the show/film.
I don’t have much time for that. To me those sort of demands are selfish. My rule of thumb for this site is essentially that if I wouldn’t want to read a spoiler because I think it will affect my enjoyment of a show, I’m not going to read it and post about it on Solar Flare.
I will mention actors, and vague plot descriptions, but thats about as far as it goes.
