Stargate SG-1: Avalon, Part 2 - Review
The second episode of season 9 of Stargate SG-1 continues with Avalon Part 2. This second part of the opening story continues setting up the new team at the SGC with the introduction of the doctor. We also get an interesting hint that the Ancients may not have originiated fom this galaxy after all.
From there, things take a step backwards though as we get to vist another of those semi-medieval societys which are being repressed by their rulers. It’s an old Stargate SG-1 favorite and there’s nothing really new here.
Everything is well enough executed and the new characters in the mix stop it from coming across as too repetative, but it’s still hard to get very excited about the situation. It also seems a bit of a waste of the Arthurian mythos that they were toying with in the first episode and the first half of this episode.
Events in the Jaffa Nation look to have more promise but are only briefly touched upon in this episode. Thats a sub-plot that will most likely play out over the entire length of the season though.
Vala’s “death” was also well played, but really, did anyone think she was actually going to stay dead?
Avalon Part 2 is actually the middle part of a three parter, though the third episode will be called Origin. That I think is the heart of the problem. The whole story might very well have worked better as a two parter.
