StarGate SG-1: Season 9, Back to Basics?
With the ninth season of Stargate SG-1 starting next week (July 15th to be precise), GateWorld has an interview with Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright, the producers of SG-1. The short of it is that Stargate SG-1 season 9 has gone old school. It will be more serious and a little less self-referential, more like the early seasons of the show.
One of the reasons for this change in tone is of course the new cast. With Ben Browder joining SG-1 and a new commanding officer as well, this is a new team and the writers get the chance to take familiar situations and make them new again.
An additional factor which should result in a fresh feel to the new season is the introduction of a whole new enemy. For years now SG-1 has been battling Anubis and the Goa’uld. The primary mythology of the show has been the Egyptian gods. With the new enemy and the introduction of an arthurian theme, there is an opportunity to create new situations and use new myths as the backdrop to the adventures of SG-1.

I’ve never gotten as much into Stargate as I would have liked to. I remember when it first started (was it on FOX? I dont recall…) and then it kind of left my view. Recently, I’ve re-discovered it on the Sci fi Channel (in no small part because I had an internship at SciFi a few months ago) but I feel like I’ve missed so much that I’m out of the loop. Maybe this new beginning will help me get more acclimated, but honestly I’m left wondering about all the stuff that I missed in the past 7 seasons or so.

Stargate was original a Showtime series but if I remember right it was syndicated about a year behind the Showtime airing. So you probably saw it occassionally on your local Fox channel.
If you’ve only seen the last season or two then I’d say you’ve missed Stargate at its best. My feeling is that it’s been in a slow decline for about 3 seasons now. Not bad, just not what it was.
Fortunately the Sci-Fi channel shows the repeats in order (Well i think there’s the Monday repeats and then the rest of the week or something.)
