Superman Movies To Get Special DVD Release

Timed to coincide with the release of the new Superman movie Superman Returns, it looks as though the original Superman movies will get a special DVD release. Ilya Salkind who co-produced the first three Superman films as weill as the Supergirl movie and Superboy tv series has said that he is talking with Michael Thau (who worked on the 2001 Superman: The Movie Special Edition) to produce new versions for a DVD release.

Salkind is working with Time Warner who are the copyright holders and there are plans to do full DVD releases for Superman I, II and III as well as Supergirl. Superman IV (which wasn’t produced by Salkind) may get a DVD release too.

The plan for the moment at least is to include documentaries and other DVD special fetaures like commentaries. Salkind will do commentaries for Superman I, II and III and they are talking to Helen Slater about doing a commentary for Supergirl.

There is also talk that the portions of Superman II which were direct by Richard Donner (fired and replaced by Richard Lester) may be re-instated and that both versions of the movie be put on the DVD. Although it’s possible that the scenes may just been inserted as extras rather than edited back into the film.

Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website eoghann.com..
