The Baker’s Boy by J V Jones, a Review
This is J V Jones first book. I had already read and been impressed by “The Barbed Coil” when I got this and was hoping for something of a similar quality. Unfortunately I didn’t get it. “The Baker’s Boy” is part one of the “Book of Words” trilogy. I’m not sure if I’ll bother to read the other two books.
The story is very much a typical fantasy plot, with evil wizards, knights, quests and prophecy. The writing style of the book seems rather juvenile. characters are painted broadly, everything is telegraphed and you are spoonfed information about the fantasy world.
There are lots of different groups all plotting against each other, but its hard to be impressed by machinations which have all the subtletly of a sledgehammer. The entire story seems contrived and unconvincing.
What makes it particularly annoying is that not only do I know the author is capable of much better, but this story itself has some glimmers of interest.
I’m left with the feeling that it could be good, if written better. It took me three weeks to read this book where it should only have taken one. Very disapointing.
If you’ve read this and been put off J V Jones work then I strongly recommend going and getting “The Barbed Coil” which is a genuinely good fantasy story.
