The Chronicles of Narnia DVD Boxed Set

It’s still a while before the new movie version of C. S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia makes it to the local theaters, but in the mean time you might want to pick up this DVD boxed set of the BBC adaptation from the late 80s and early 90s.

The Chronicles of Narnia (3 disc set)

The Chronicles of Narnia 3 Disc Boxed Set contains the complete versions of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian & The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair which are the only four stories that the BBC adapted of the 7 novels.

I’ve always been a huge fan of this BBC series, but a word of warning to people who haven’t seen them before. The series is now around 15 years old and the budget was modest. Consider how acting styles, directing styles and special effects have changed before you judge the quality of this set. For its time and for a tv series the special effects were reasonable (though not amazin), now they will look poor. The pace of the episodes will seem slow to you, pacing in tv shows has sped up a lot in the last decade or so.

I’ll also admit that the acting was a little clunky in places, but charming in its own way. The big plus for this series to me is its faithfulness to the books.

Eoghann Irving is amongst other things the creator and Editor of Solar Flare. He has a life long interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy and a pressing need to share this interest with anyone who will listen. Find out more at his personal website eoghann.com..
