The Greatest Show In The Galaxy #5

Category: Books, Films, Science Fiction, Stargate
published September 29th, 2006

Presenting The Greatest Show In The Galaxy, the fifth edition of my Sci-Fi Carnival. We have four submissions for you to enjoy this week and a bonus post that I thought you might be interested to read.

The Greatest Show In The Galaxy will be taking a one week break and returning on Friday 13th of October. I'm not sure exactly what sort of omen that is. There's no great drama though, I'm just taking my wife and family on a hard earned vacation and won't be available to post the carnival next week.

Television

Dox presents Should we try save Stargate SG-1? posted at My 4 Hobbies.

It's a simple enough question and Dox gives his own personal answer, one that I find I largely agree with. This season has been less than compelling viewing

Film

Niall Harrison presents Children of Men posted at Torque Control, a review of the movie Children of Men.

Children of Men is a movie adaptation of the P D James novel of the same name. While I am familiar with P D James I haven't read this book and this was really the first review I've read for the film too.

Meta

Paul Raven / Armchair Anarchist presents A vindication of ‘beer-money’ science fiction posted at Velcro City Tourist Board, saying, "What the hell is 'literary' sf, anyway? Andrew Wheeler came up with a definition that worked for me, as well as one for its stylistic opposite: 'beer-money' sf. But is either subgenre inherently 'better' than the other? And could the genre as a whole survive with one of them absent from the spectrum?"

Another very interesting submission from Paul Raven. I hadn't heard the term "beer-money" science fiction before, but I can see how it fits. I've posted before that I'm not a fan of categorizing or sub-categorizing. One of my reasons for that is that I find my tastes invariably overlap several different categories. In this case I freely admit to enjoying a lot of what would be considered beer-money SF, but I can enjoy some of the more literary stuff too.

Written Word

John D. presents The Coolest Science Fiction Setting (Written) posted at John D.

John is another regular contributor to the carnival and his latest submission is really a collaboration between himself and the readers over at SF Signal. His challenge was for everyone to suggest the coolest science fiction settings specifically from written science fiction. The resulting list reminds me of just how diverse the settings for written science fiction can be.

And Finally

Normally I use this final section to highlight one of my posts from this blog. However, this week I unfortunately didn't have time to write what I'd consider a strong opinion piece. So instead of giving the slot to a post which doesn't really deserve it, I thought I would highlight something that Big Dumb Object brought to my attention, Ursula K Le Guin's review of Margaret Attwoods new collection of short stories Moral Disorder.

The next edition of The Greatest Show In The Galaxy will be on Friday 13th October, submissions will be accepted right up until 5PM ET on 10/13/06, but the submission form is open now so you don't have to wait until then. Since it will be two weeks before the next carnival, feel free to submit twice if you want.

Submit your blog article to the next edition of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy using our carnival submission form.
