The Harry Dresden Universe: Books, Adaptations & Spinoffs

Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is the central character in the Dresden Files series of books written by Jim Butcher. Dresden is a wizard/private investigator and is an unusual example of the current Urban Fantasy sub-genre, if for no other reason than that the protagonist is male.

That book series currently consists of:

In addition to the central novels, there are several short stories by Jim Butcher, also featuring Harry Dresden.

Further books are planned for the series, but no titles have been announced at this time.

The Dresden Files TV Series

In 2005 the SciFi Channel optioned the novels for a tv series which finally aired in January 2007. The show which was quite a loose adaptation of the novels lasted for only a single season. While the core elements of Harry’s story remained the same there were significant alterations to characters and character histories as is often the case with tv adaptations.

The Dresden Files ran for 12 episodes which aired on the ScFi Channel in the UK, Space in Canada and SkyOne in the UK. The cancellation was announced in August 2007.

Harry Dresden was played by Paul Blackthorne who went on to star in the ABC series Big Shots and the NBC series Lipstick Jungle.

Lt. Murphy was played by Valerie Cruz who has filmed several as yet unreleased movies:

  • Untitled Gehenna Project (2009) (post-production)
  • Linea, La (2008) (post-production)
  • No Man’s Land: The Rise of Reeker
  • Bob was played by Terrence Mann who has roles in the following upcoming movies:

    • # Red Hook (2008/I) (post-production)
    • Eavesdrop (2008) (completed)
    • Jazz in the diamond district (2008) (completed)

Dresden Files Comics and Graphic Novels

    Welcome To The Jungle

Dabel Brothers Publications are currently releasing a four part comic series featuring Harry Dresden. The series called Welcome to the Jungle was written by Jim Butcher for Dabel Brothers and has Harry Dresden investigating a brutal mauling at the Lincoln Park Zoo. It doesn’t take Dresden long to see there’s more going on here than a simple animal attack. Individual issues should be available at your local comic shop. A hardcore graphic novel of Welcome to the Jungle will be released in October 2008.

    Storm Front

Dabel Brothers intend to follow up Welcome to the Jungle with an adaptation of the first Dresden book Storm Front. They have announced the creative team of writer Mark Powers and artist Ardian Syaf for the project which is scheduled to begin in October 2008. The series will almost certainly be collected as a graphic novel but no date has been announced yet.

Based on other adaptations that Dabel Brothers have worked on, it is safe to assume that Storm Front will be a highly faithful adaptation.

    The Dresden Files Roleplaying Game

Apparently novels, short stories, tv and comics wasn’t sufficient to contain Harry Dresden. There’s also a role playing game titled The Dresden Files Roleplaying Game which is currently in the early playtesting phase. The lead developers on the project are Fred Hicks and Rob Donoghue which is being produced by Evil Hat.

I loved the series & feel that Sci-fi didn’t give it a fair shot. Ghost Hunters is one of the worst shows ever. Sorry for that stray thought. The Dresden Universe is as rich as Buffy & Star Trek’s is.

Even with the variations from Butcher’s books, Sci-Fi’s Dresden series was superior to most of the channel’s original series ( with the exceptions of the newfangled and grittier Battlestar Galactica and Dr. Who) and the plethora of schlocky, paint-by-the-numbers movies.
