The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe Takes Top Spot

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe got off to an impressive start capturing the number one spot at the box office and raking in something like $67 million in the first three days of release according to Variety.

Narnia pretty firmly trounced the cometition with Aeon Flux slumping to 6th place and even Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire dropped to third place (though this is its fourth week of release).

This financial success is accompanied by a solid thumbs up from the critics. RottenTomatoes.com is currently rating The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as 76% fresh. The critical reaction is not uniformly positive by any means, but much of the criticism that has been applied comes from the source novel itself rather than the adapation. Putting aside plot weaknesses (which are inherent in the source) there is plenty of praise of both the casting and the special effects in the movie.

The Chronicles of Narnia also has the plus of being a clearly kid friendly movie that ironically is less preachy than most kids movies.
