The Most Annoying Robots In Sci-Fi

Category: Science Fiction
published August 18th, 2006

For your amusement I present to you a short list of the most annoying robots in Science Fiction. Consider this a friendly tribute to the camp nature of many sci-fi movies and shows. You'll notice none of them come from written science fiction where robots have been treated much better. Let me know if I missed anyone off the list.

10) R2D2 - Star Wars
More useful than his golden friend, but the blips and beeps become damned irritating after a while.

9) K-9 - Doctor Who
Well it speaks in a cool roboty voice and it even has a little laser beam thing, but come on, it's still a robot dog! Plus it couldn't appear in any areas where the floor wasn't completely flat.

8) C3P0 - Star Wars
C3P0 is of course technically an android, but let's not quibble. Self important, twittery and almost entirely useless C3P0 is intended to be comic relief in the Star Wars movies, but like most of George Lucas' ideas about comedy it frequently falls flat.

7) Marvin the Paranoid Android - Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy
While Marvin does score points for being deliberately and comedically annoying, the fact remains that as a character he is incredibly irritating.

6) Robby The Robot - The Forbidden Planet
Simultaneously very powerful and immensely stupid.

5) Robot B9 - Lost In Space
Danger Will Robinson! See Robby the Robot

4) Box - Logan's Run
Well he's silvery and shiny and looks like he was put together from some cardboard and aluminum foil. Plus he's called BOX for goodness sake.

3) V.I.N.Cent - The Black Hole
I know it's a Disney film, but what were they thinking giving a giant cartoon like eyes?

2) Twiki - Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
Beedee beede beedee. Plus why would anyone design a robot to be half the size of a normal person?

And the most annoying robot in science fiction is…

1) Johnny 5 - Short Circuit
Well to be honest this entire movie was annoying, but Number 5 was the single most annoying element in it. The situation is made worse by the fact that he's supposed to be cute.

Come to think of it are there any robots in science fiction movies and tv shows that aren't annoying?

So you wasted all of this space to tell us you think all science fiction robots are annoying. I don’t think you missed one. Was there really a point to this article?

Not sure if it’s a robot in the classic sense, but The Liberator in Blakes 7 was pretty annoying.

I actually looked for a definition of ‘robot’ and came up with (in part): 3. any machine or mechanical device that operates automatically with humanlike skill.

I suppose a spaceship controlled by a computer, with sentient reactions, analytic capabilities and somewhat of a chip on it’s shoulder, can be classed as a robot.

Well if you look at a lot of the things we currently call robots, I guess that Zen (the computer that controlled the Liberator) would qualify. But was Zen that annoying? I thought it was Orac, (the one that looked like some bright lights in a fishtank)that was the really annoying one.
