Providing the Information That Sci-Fi Fans Need

The Quatermass Experiment Remade

This may not mean that much to American sci-fi fans but its a big big deal to UK sci-fi fans. Big Dumb Object informs me that the BBC is producing a remake of the original Quatermass Experiment.

The new version of The Quatermass Experiment will be shown on BBC on April 2nd as a one hour program. At the time of the original’s broadcast it was considered groundbreaking drama. It was broadcast in 1953 and was so popular that it spawned two sequels Quatermass II and Quatermass & the Pit. The success of the tv serials resulted in films being made too.

My understanding (it’s a little before my time) is that the original serial aired as six thirty minute live broadcasts. It was recorded onto film, but the results were poor and now only the first two episodes survive.

In a surprising move BBC4 will be doing a live version of The Quatermass Experiment. The first live drama on the BBC in years, maybe decades. But the reports indicate a one hour running time, so there will be some cutting of the story obviously. Probably not as much as you think as dramas back then tended to be much slower paced anyway.

Perhaps if it does well BBC America will snap it up and show it over here?
