To Lose One Director Is A Misfortune: To Lose Two Seems Like Carelessness
Matthew Vaughn has sensationally quit the X-Men 3 movie just weeks before the start of principle photography. The 34 year old director, who is probably most famous for being married to supermodel Claudia Schiffer, was only brought into replace Bryan Singer a few months ago.
The official reason given is that he had decided not to uproot his wife and family from their London home to the Vancouver location where the movie is being filmed.
The departure was so sudden that Fox studio president Hutch Parker gave the official response to the press himself rather than rely on a corporate PR flak. He said: “We understand Matthew’s reasons for leaving, as nothing is more important than family.”
Vaughn who is a confirmed comic book fan was allegedly regarded in the film community a strange selection for the mega profitable film franchise as he has only directed one previous film, Layer Cake, but he was reportedly personally chosen by executive producer Avi Arad over other interested parties.
Of course now Arad is now looking for a replacement who would be available to begin shooting on the production start date of August 2nd. This is only 9 weeks away and getting a competent deputy in time will be at the very least, extremely difficult.
The movie world rumour mill is already hard at work as to who would have a time window in their schedule. One name that keeps coming up is that of Joss Whedon.
This writer director is already familiar with the material as he currently writes one of Marvel comics X-Men comics. At the moment he is in preprodution for the forthcoming Wonder Woman project and may not be contractually able to take on this extra duty.
I have been a science fiction, comic book and animation fan for a very long time. I honestly believe that comics are an extremely vital and exciting art form whose true worth is only now beginning to be recognised in the mainstream media and this appreciation can only continue to grow in the future. I regularly write science fiction short stories and send them off to the magazines. So far their response has not exactly allowed me to give up my day job but I plan to keep plugging away at it..
