Too Many Books?

Over at SFSignal, John poses an interesting question. Are too many books being published? Apparently there were some 2,500 odd books published last year, which is quite a lot and it’s been suggested this may be flooding the market.

I’m inclined to think it probably is. Lets face it the book market is not a growth industry. There’s a limited number of book buyers and they all have a limited amount of money to spend. If too much is published then the money is spread thinly and no authors do well out if it.

Its a fine balance obviously, because if too few books are published then there’s not much of a range to choose from. But honestly there seem to be an awful lot of books out there that have been rushed to market without proper editing or without much to recommend them beyond being the hot topic of the moment.
