I'm referring to the Sci Fi Channel's recent re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica, not the original 70s series which, while fun, doesn't particularly stand out in my mind. The new Battlestar Galactica is a completely different deal.
Eschewing the Star Wars inspired theatrics of the original series, the new Battlestar Galactica instead gives us a very modern science fiction story. Plot points from current events are mixed together with more soap-operatic elements and served up in a pseudo-documentary filming style.
The result is science fiction with a much darker edge than fans are used to seeing on TV. Battlestar Galactica takes full advantage of the fact that it's being broadcast on a cable network. Episodes are deeply intertwined and really need to be seen in sequence to fully appreciate the subtleties. The writers don't pull any punches and aren't scared to portray characters in an unsympathetic light. The whole show is written in shades of gray.
Only half way through its second season (though with a third now confirmed) it's hard to really judge what Battlestar Galactica's impact will be. But it may well be that it's success will allow space faring science fiction to return to our screens on a regular basis.

Check again. I’m ranking Battlestar Galactica as better than Stargate and Stargate as better than X-Files. Early seasons of the X-Files were very strong, but the series lost is way badly about halfway into its run and a lot of the nonsense in the later seasons really hurt it in my eyes.

I’m sorry, I misread your posts! As for the x-files I think you are correct about the x-files!
