Universal Buys New Sci-Fi Pitch
Variety reports that Unversal have bought the pitch for a sci-fi movie from Simon Kinberg and Brett Matthews. Details about the movie which is described as a thriller are being kept firmly under wraps, but the screenplay will apparently be written by Brett Matthews. Kinberg will produce the movie alongside David Engle and Lawrence Mattis.
Kinberg is quoted as saying that he came up with the idea for the film and then began working on it with Matthews. However all he would say about the story itself was that it was:
” more thriller than big, broad action; more gritty than other sci-fi movies we’ve seen in the recent past. Almost what ‘Bourne Identity’ did for action movies, this will attempt to do for sci-fi movies.”
Matthews was also pretty vague on the details of the story, but did have this to say:
“We wanted the science-fiction aspect of our story to be eerily plausible, for the concept to be fantastic, but only until you really think about it.”
Amongst his previous work Brett Matthews has written an episode of Joss Whedon’s short lived science fiction series Firefly. He also wrote the animated filme The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury and Bionicle: The Feature. Decide for yourself if that’s a good or bad thing.
I will say that it would be nice to see a science fiction film that isn’t simply trying to be the next Star Wars.
