V For Vendetta Film

Once again SciFi Ranter Girl’s blog alerts me to an interesting sci-fi development. Oh hell why don’t you just go and read her blog. Its more interesting than mine anyway. ;)

So it turns out that the Wachowski brothers are producing a film adaptation of Alan Moore’s excellent graphic novel V For Vendetta.

The story was originally written in the 80s (thats important considering the nature of the story) and was set in 1997. A nuclear war in the eighties wiped out Europe, and Britain was thrown into chaos. A fascist party rose to power and committed atrocities similar to the crimes of the Nazis. V is a vigilante who wants Britain to wake up and be free.

The Wachowski’s have an excellent visual style but more questionable storytelling abilities. But here they’ve got an excellent story already broken down in to a storyboard for them to work from. Could be interesting.

Oh and don’t be fooled by some of the descriptions. This is not some generic, what if the Nazi’s won story. Its not my favorite Alan Moore story, but its a damn good one.

  1. Sci Fi Ranter Girl

I’ll give it a chance. I’m still jaded though. Maybe they won’t be able to mess up a
good story that has already been written out for them. You never know though.
I thought B&B or Lucas couldn’t mess up a prequel but they proved us wrong.
    (exaggerated) Waitng to see….

  2. This is a scary concept for me to grasp. Please don’t let the Hollywood Machine churn an interesting and important work into the usual formulaic pap that current superhero films have become. FYI, here’s the IMDB entry on the guy who’s going to be directing this thing.

  3. Well you can look at that a few different ways. I mean certainly some of the films he’s worked on are visually stunning (which isn’t bad in itself) but not exactly mentally stimulating.

On the other hand he wasn’t the primary director so shouldn’t be blamed for that really. Plus you could also note that he worked on Dark City.
