V Movie Trilogy
Filmstalker is reporting that the movie version of the television series V may be moving forward. Series creator Kenneth Johnson is quoted as saying:
“… since I own the motion picture rights to V, we’re in the process to do a remake of the original mini-series first as a theatrical feature, which I’m so jazzed about because it will give me an opportunity to really realize it and execute it in a way that was impossible to do back then. Then that will lead to the obvious sequel, because it is a franchise, and then we’ll get into The Second Generation and I’m hoping we’ll be able to do two movies, because there’s certainly enough material in the novel to warrant two separate sequels. That’s my goal at this point and that’s what we’re in the process of doing. I just literally came from a meeting, 15-20 minutes ago with a fellow in Beverly Hills who really says that we’re gonna do it.”
The V mini-series was a real landmark for televised science fiction, but to be honest it does look quite dated now. Also playing to the mini-series format resulted in a lot of time repeatedly escaping from alien ships.
I also wonder if freeing V from the limitations of what was considered acceptable for network tv might allow Johnson to explore the subject matter even more effectively. V may have had aliens and spaceships, but that wasn’t what it was about. It actually tackled a number of serious issues.
I’m particularly curious about hwere he sees V: The Second Generation heading.

I really did like the V series, and that’s very insightful of you to say that it has a lot of serious issues running through it and if you pick up on the immigration, racism and occupation issues in there then you can see that they are very apt today.
Will it really translate though, and can it command the budget it needs?

Well I’m not too concerned about budget. With the level that greenscreen has reached in recent years, they could achieve a lot on even a modest movie budget.
Whether it would be allowed to reach its full potential or end up dumbed down even more than the tv series is questionable though. There is definitely a push in Hollywood for action at the expense of thought.
But I like to take a positive approach to projects at least until there’s evidence they are going badly. Being pessimistic all the time just seems depressing.
