War of the Worlds Review
Aint It Cool News has an early review of the Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise film War of the Worlds from a German showing of the movie. The tone of the review is very positive on the whole, but it seems that the trailers I’ve seen so far are fairly representative so I’m probably going to be dissatisfied with this one.
From the sound of things, while the overall events of H. G. Wells War of the Worlds are played out in the movie, the actual plot and themes of the movie are completely different to Wells story. In effect it is an alien invasion movie with War of the Worlds tagged on as the title.
I generally don’t have any problem with films radically changing stories when they adapt them to film, but to effectively throw out both the plot and theme and keep the title seems utterly pointless. If I can look at this movie as something other than War of the Worlds I will probably enjoy it, but how wasteful of a classic story.
