Well I’ve been frantically reading three weeks worth of comics to get myself caught up and I’m finally in a position to at least some comic book reviews again. Starting with the most important book I missed.
Final Crisis #1
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: J. G. Jones
Publisher: DC
As promised Final Crisis started with Kamandi and then zipped rapidly on to the death of Orion (with cameos from two Green Lanterns and a Question). And it retains that pace for the entire of this first issue. Honestly it doesn’t make a lot of sense taken as is. I’m assuming that once we have a couple more issues it will all start to fit together, but it’s not very satisfying to read in serial form, so far at least.
The art however is fantastic.

Giant Size Astonishing X-Men #1
Writer: Joss Whedon
Artist: John Cassady
Publisher: Marvel
Joss Whedon’s long drawn out Astonishing X-Men story arc finally comes to an end in this rather drawn out giant sized issue. It’s an emotional conclusion and the art work remains as good as always, but the cameos from all the Marvel superheroes just felt like unnecessary padding to me. Particularly since they didn’t actually do anything.
Next week I’ll be all caught up and I’ll try and do a full review column.
