Weekly Comic Book Reviews 0/7/14/08

Ultimate Spider-Man #123
Writers: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Stuart Immonen
Publisher: Marvel

The Ultimate line as a whole lost its sense of direction some time ago and while Ultimate Spider-man has always been the strongest comic in that line, it too seems to be meandering without any real purpose. Here we get to find out what Venom has been up to, but it’s hard to really care.

Ultimate Origins #2
Writers: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Butch Guice
Publisher: Marvel

This is supposed to be the lead up to something big in the Ultimate Universe (Ultimatum). Except that so far it’s really just Secret Origins and the origins haven’t been very secret (or indeed much different from the main Marvel Universe origins). There are a few hints of something larger, but so far this series is just a bit meh.

Trinity #6
Writers: Kurt Busiek
Artist: Mark Bagley
Publisher: DC

DC’s latest weekly series turns its attention to the main plot for a moment with an issue that heavily focusses on the Trinity and what each of their roles are. Unfortunately that means a lot of standing around having completely unnatural conversations. This issue will reader better as part of the trade I think. The backup strip gives us more action and while I’m not a fan of backup strips as a whole, this one does link nicely into the larger narrative.

Secret Invason #4
Writers: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu
Publisher: Marvel

Half way through the Secret Invasion mini-series it’s hard to find a lot of new things to say. In essence this series is just a massive fight after all. It’s not usually seen as Bendis’ strong point, but he’s handling it pretty well and doing a great job of keeping the paranoia and confusion levels high.

Justice Society of America #17
Writers: Geoff Johns
Artist: Fernando Pasarin
Publisher: DC

The riffing on Kingdom Come continues as we see Gog’s affect on the people of Africa. People are healed, heroes are healed. Of course we know it’s bound to come to sticky end and that’s the problem with this sort of stories. It’s hard to make it hold much weight when you know that things will have to be reset by the end. Solidly executed though and there are some character moments that give the story a bit of impact.

Booster Gold #1,000,000
Writers: Geoff Johns & Jeff Katz
Artist: Dan Jurgens
Publisher: DC

The concluding part of the Blue and the Gold storyline is essentially a postscript which appears to be setting up or re-confirming the status quo for Booster. It’s bittersweet of course and I’m sure that Ted Kord’s fans aren’t happy although it did seem inevitable. The next issue might be a great time to jump on board if you aren’t already reading this fun series.
