Providing the Information That Sci-Fi Fans Need

Weekly Comic Book Reviews 5/12/08

Avengers: The Initiative #12
Writer: Dan Slott & Christos N. Gage
Artist: Steve Uy
Publisher: Marvel

I love this series. Slott mixed together some unknown and underused Marvel characters and perfectly captured the feeling of the Marvel Universe immediately after Civil War. Issue 12 is his wrap up issue so written with Christos Gage (who takes the reigns solo next month). From the look of things Gage is going to have to rebuild from the ground up as half the cast graduates and another third leaves for one reason or another. Not keen on the character coming back to life with no explanation. That just seems like a cop out though.

X-Men: Legacy #210
Writer: Mike Carey
Artist: Scot Eaton
Publisher: Marvel

X-Men Legacy is a strange comic. Essentially it’s a trawl through the X-Men’s past filling in little bits and pieces. But I’m left with the feeling it only exists to fill time until the whole X-Men range is ready for the next big event. It is interesting to see some of the tragic events the X-Men have encountered through the eyes of Professor X, but I’m not sure we needed this many issues of it. It’s well written it just doesn’t seem to have any direction so far.

Ultimate X-Men #93
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Harvey Tolibao
Publisher: Marvel

Robert Kirkman finally concludes his story arc with what amounts to little more than a cosmic reset. Can we do something interesting with this title now?

Legion of Superheroes #41
Writer: Jim Shooter
Artist: Aaron Lopresti
Publisher: DC Comics

I’ve never had much luck getting into Legion of Superheroes, but with Jim Shooter’s return to the title, I thought it was worth another try. Legion of Superheroes has a very long history and it’s been rebooted multiple times, making it almost impossible to figure out what did or didn’t happen. So I’m approaching this as an essentially new series and it has possibilities. Some of the dialogue is a little childish, particularly all the futuristic slang, but the scenario that Shooter is laying out has me intrigued enough to be back next issue.

Amazing Spider-Man #558
Writer: Bob Gale
Artist: Barry Kitson
Publisher: Marvel

Spider-Man has fallen into a nice routine with Brand New Day. It’s not knocking my socks off, but the stories have been largely entertaining and the status-quo is more satisfactory to me than what preceded it. This week we see a number of elements from the previous stories coincide nicely and I think the multi-writer, multi-storyarc approach is working very well for three times a month Spidey.

Secret Invasion #2
Writer: Michael Brian Bendis
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu
Publisher: Marvel

The second issue of Marvel’s summer blockbuster slows down the pace from the first episode, but keeps the action high. Honestly there isn’t that much progress this issue, except for that one Skrull reveal, but I don’t have any real complaints because the cliffhanger promises worldwide mayhem and the paranoia level just keeps rising.

Rann Thanagar: Holy War #1
Writer: Jim Starlin
Artist: Ron Limm
Publisher: DC

I was a Marvel fan growing up so I’m not that familiar with the intricacies of the DC Universe but a Starling space story is always worth a look. This issue had me quite confused due to the sheer number of characters and places that were introduced. Hopefully the second issue will start to draw all these elements together.
