Why Nightcrawler Was Cut From X-Men 3
According to a report at XMenFilms.net the Nightcrawler was dropped from current scripts of X-Men 3 for a very simple reason. That being quite simply that the studio felt there were too many X-Men in the story. The studio was keen for the new heroes like Beast to get a decent amount of screen time and with so many X-Men in the script something had to give.
A second, but related issue was budget. The more X-Men you have, the more it costs for the actors and for the special effects. There are no plans to recast Nightcrawler and his absence will not be referred to in the story so its always possible he could return in future films.
Also in the same report there is a claim that despite what the studio is saying, not all of the actors have signed back on for X3 yet. Specifically James Marsden is not yet a lock for Cyclops. The studio does want Marsden back as Cyclops, but there are still issues with his Superman shoot.
There’s also at least one new hero yet to be cast. Gambit is still in the script but no actor has been cast in the role so far. With the movie due to start filming in two months, they are cutting this one very close.
All things considered, I’d have to agree with them about Nightcrawler. He wasn’t that great an element in the previous film and I was wondering how they’d find time for all the different characters in X3.
