Will Eisner Dies
I’m sad to report that legendary comics artist and writer Will Eisner died on January 3rd 2005 following complications froma quadruple heart bypass surgery. He was 87.
Eisner’s most famous work was his writing and illustration of The Spirit, created by Eisner in 1941 and distributed as an insert in Sunday newspapers. The Spirit was published and reissued in various forms for almost 60 years.
Eisner is also credited with popularizing the graphic novel form with the publication in 1978 of his story collection A Contract With God. Eisner was so highly regarded in his profession that the top award in comics is named after him. The Eisner Award is given out each year at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Eisner’s final graphic novel, The Plot, was finished last summer and will be published this spring by W.W. Norton, Andelman said.
