X-Men 4, Spin-offs Already Underway

Contrary to previous reports, it seems that X-Men 3: The Last Stand, will not be the last movie in the X-Men franchise. Negotiations are ongoing with Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen and Anna Paquin to sign for another movie and apparently several of the new cast members from the last movie are already signed. I would assume that anyone signed up for X-Men 3 would have a clause in their contract obliging them to do X-Men 4 if it happened. Older cast members would be clear of any such clauses by now.

No serious work is expected on X-Men 4 for some time though as the priority right now is a Wolverine spin-off movie staring Hugh Jackman. Production on Wolverine won’t happen until 2007 at the earliest as Hugh Jackman is currently working on another movie. There’s also a “Young Magneto” proposal in development.

I’m sure the Wolverine movie will do well, since everyone seems to love Wolverine, but I’m not at all sure about “Young Magneto”. That one has the potential to be horrible.

I actually like the idea of the movies borrowing a step from the comics and writing out some of the “original” (in the movies) team to feature some of the newer faces more prominently. Over the three films, a lot of mutants have been introduced and there’s plenty of potential there.
