X-Men, Magneto Film Spinoff
According to Sci Fi Wire there’s going to be a spinoff film based on the Magneto character in the X-Men films, played by Ian McKellen.
The script for Magneto will be written by Sheldon Turner and is the second spinoff from the franchise, following a deal with screenwriter David Benioff to write Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman.
I find myself very suspicious of both these spin-offs. For a start, I’ve seen how badly spinoff films usually do. Then on top of that I’ve watched how badly most spin-off comics (some based on these very characters) do. So call me cynical if you like but I think this has the potential to go very badly wrong.
While there are alot of X-Men characters that deserve some exploration in the films, I’ve always felt that as soon as you take them solo, you’re removing a big part of what makes the X-Men interesting, which is their interaction with each other.
Still, given the success of the first two films, I guess this was inevitable.
